Tangles and prints and evolution.

Few things on this drizzly Tuesday—

  • I added a recent project up on the site entitled The Triumph of Spectacle for Nebraska Wesleyan University’s Archways Magazine (previewed above). Also added the most recent Alice illustration for Picture Book Report.
  • Last week I hosted my good friend Patrick and shared Portland with him— we did a lot of drawing, met up with good friends, read comics, and worked together. I have some sketches I’ll upload soon. It’s excellent to have decade-old friends and open the creativity floodgates. Hugely inspiring, and now I think I might try a sensory deprivation-float tank in town! Pretty excited for that.
  • Grateful to my first few Print Club members (and a special thanks to Drawn! for the shout-out!)— your support has gotten me ordering letterpress prints and buying emulsion with a giddy grin on my face. I love you guys, seriously. To come: new prints! Since Portland’s trying to get me down with all the rain (still adjusting from all that Arizona sun) I think I’m going to do a sun-themed print first. Also on my list of ideas: textiles, tigers, wunderkammer, and a hundred faces. We’ll see what inspires me first.
  • I’ve been reading The Handmade Marketplace lately and it’s been good food for thought. It’s making me think about branding and needing to hone my voice both in my illustration and my product offerings. Namely, I need to come up with a good brand/title that fits with my shop. Still working on that; but hopefully I’ll think up a winner soon!
  • On a related note, I’ve been thinking about product photography and styling— how do you do it? I kind of hate my camera (a point and shoot digital Canon that is okay, but the shots I take are often too dark or blurry), but I’ve been wanting so badly to take more photographs both of items I make and also in order to document my life. Sometimes it seems like more of a hassle than it’s worth to have to color correct and go through pictures on my computer to upload the right one. I feel like I need to simplify and find a less frustrating solution. Maybe I can find a good photographer friend in Portland? We’ll see…
