Pumpkins, squirrels, and a bit of a sneak peek!

The newest issue of Jamie Magazine came out today, and along with it my illustrations for their Gardening column. Always a pleasure to work with Adrienne Pitts and the team at Jamie. This issue is starting to creep into the late summer/early fall months, so I got the chance to illustrate pumpkins and spinach and even some squirrels. I actually got to incorporate gouache into the final digital artwork— it was surprisingly a lot of fun!

Today Brand New School unveiled their campaign for Cartoon Network— if you watch the video, you’ll see some snippets of my work they animated. Hopefully I’ll do a full post soon with the two videos! Was psyched to see it on one of my favorite blogs, Brand New (no relation!).

Also, I know a lot of people really enjoyed my Hello Llama pattern from a ways back, and now I’m offering it for sale on Spoonflower. Please enjoy! If you make something with it, please show me too, I’d love that.

More drawings from the garden…

Issue 11 of Jamie Magazine just came out, and with it, a new set of gardening illustrations. (I’m currently at work on issue 12, which includes more squirrels and pumpkins. Pumpkins are one of my recurring assignments— I did about thirty for Nick Jr. back in the day, and one for Vegetarian Times last year. Good thing it’s fun for me!)

Since it makes better sense in context of the layout, I’ll just share the illustrations that way. The edible flower one was pretty tricky—  lots of bright colors I don’t ordinarily use. Fun stuff though!

Gardening from Jamie Oliver.

I don’t garden (though I sort of want to!), but I do like food, so more opportunities to practice drawing it is a-okay with me! Working with the lovely Adrienne Pitts again over at Jamie Magazine— not even the wrath of Eyjafjallajokull could stop us from getting some fun artwork together! (Seriously, bad timing when you’re working on deadlines. Shame on you, Volcano.) Anyhow, this may be a sort of recurring assignment for me— which I am psyched for, because drawing plants surprisingly can be a lot of fun. And I’ve never been great at it so I’m glad for the opportunity to up my skills! There were five spots all in all for each subject.

This one was all about the varieties of salad greens— I’ve decided I vastly prefer the British terms to ours. We don’t get to eat rocket! Crying shame in my book.

A little spot of broad beans and ladybugs. There was one point while working late that I drew a Mameshiba on a bean. The things we do to amuse ourselves, friends!

The unfortunately named water butt.

How to hoe your garden.

And lastly, picking potatoes.

Since I’ve been bad on sharing process, also attaching some of the sketches I came up with for them. I haven’t had to come up with a lot of multiple sketches for these, so they don’t really change too much from start to finish.

And here’s how they look like on the page. I hope you enjoy!
